Australian men informed about prostate cancer
Almost 3,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in Australia and the incidence of the disease increases significantly for men aged over 60. A recent research at University of Notre Dame Australia, reveals that Australian men in the age group most at risk of getting prostate cancer don’t know much about the disease.
If the cancer is detected before it has migrated in the body, the treatment is extremely effective. But the biggest problem is that this type of cancer may be silent until it has actually spread. The truth is that very often prostate cancer can be asymptomatic until men start getting bone pain, from secondary cancer.
The study was conducted in five GP clinics in Western Australia. More than Aussie 500 men aged between 40 and 80 were quizzed on their knowledge of prostate cancer.
Researchers concluded that lack of knowledge about the disease could be due to men often not paying attention to their health.
Among the study condcusions, we may list:
Four out of five did not know the function of the prostate.
Almost half did not know the disease was the second most common form of cancer in men behind skin cancer.
58 per cent thought getting the disease would lead to a rapid death.
Younger men with a history of prostate cancer in their family are at greater risk.
One of the largest misconceptions about prostate cancer was a belief trouble urinating was one of the first symptoms of the disease
Side effects from radiotherapy and removal of the prostate can include incontinence and impotence.
Only a minority would refuse treatment once aware of possible side effects
