My true love gave to me chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital warts

Warning on increase in STIs and risk behaviour over the party season. People must improve sexual health practices during the Christmas season in order to stem the "rising tide" of sexually transmitted infections, Wales's top doctor warned today.

The advice from Dr Tony Jewell, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Wales, comes over fears that Christmas is the season of unprotected sex.

Dr Jewell said many people who carry sexually transmitted infections are unaware of the fact – putting their health and other people's well-being at risk.

Figures show that:

  • there has been an increasing number of people presenting at sexual health clinics with chlamydia since 2000 – over 3,500 cases according to 2006 figures;
  • men now comprise 46 per cent of chlamydia cases, compared to 41 per cent in 2000;
  • gonorrhoea case numbers have also increased in five years with a 46 per cent increase between 2000 and 2004; and
  • there were around 860 people being treated for HIV/AIDS in Wales in 2006 – 30 in every 100,000 people).
Dr Jewell said: "There is a rising tide of sexually transmitted infections in Wales, despite attempts to reduce the rates.

"The rates are also likely to underestimate the actual prevalence. Many people who have chlamydia, for example, may not be aware that they are carrying – and potentially transmitting – the infection, which has many adverse impacts such as pelvic inflammatory disease which can lead to infertility.

"People should be especially careful during the Christmas season. Improving sexual health and increasing the use of contraceptives such as condoms will help reduce this increasing sexual problem.

"Remembering to take precautions means reducing the risk of getting a most unwanted Christmas present."

Dr Jewell also warned revellers against drinking excessive amounts of alcohol during the festive season.

Figures show that 40 per cent of people in Wales regularly drink more than the recommended limit; two out of every five patients at an A&E are thought to have arrived with alcohol as a contributory factor; and Wales had 12 deaths per 100,000 people relating to alcohol between 2001 and 2003, with the trend of deaths from this cause rising over the past 30 years.

Dr Jewell said: "Many people enjoy a drink or two at Christmas, and if it's done sensibly there's no problem. But excessive drinking often occurs during the Christmas season and people should try to keep their intake to sensible levels.

"The increasing culture of drinking to excess, particularly among young people, is leading to greater risk behaviour which can not only result in unsafe sex but also injury, road traffic crashes and anti-social behaviour. It will also lead to serious health issues in later life and greater pressures on the NHS to treat the complications of alcohol abuse."
