Brazilian researchers at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School report that treatment of obstructive sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) seems to improve early signs of atherosclerosis.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to myocardial stroke and infarction, and both associations appear to be mediated through effects on atherosclerosis. Whether effective treatment of OSA would reduce the atherosclerotic burden, however, was unclear.
The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine for October 2007.
