A mixed research team from the University of Leeds and Queen’s University Belfast are working to develop a biological cements able to repair ‘burst fractures’ of the spine.
A similar cements is used in joint replacement surgery, but ‘burst fractures’ to the spine are much more difficult to treat because in severe cases fragments of bone can be pushed into the spinal cord. This new biological cements will help surgeons to join bone fragments together and stabilize the spine with the use of metal screws and rods
