According to results of a National Institutes of Health-sponsored study, consumption of a low glycemic index diet may improve blood sugar control in children and adolescents with type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes.
The findings, reported in the journal Diabetes Care, suggest that a low glycemic index diet can improve blood sugar control “to a clinically meaningful degree above that obtained by careful carbohydrate counting and contemporary insulin regimens.” Results also show that a low glycemic index diet may reduce the dose of insulin required while improving blood sugar control.
