According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the fifth-leading killer of Americans
It is not diabetes killing people, but complications. There are thousands of stories about diabetic patients who have lost limbs or gone blind because of poor disease control. Statistics show that two out of three people with type I or type II diabetes die from a stroke or heart attack — the combined leading causes of death among diabetics.
The key to reducing the risk for diabetes-related complications which occurs when blood flow to the limbs is impaired is to keep blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels within recommended ranges.
