A new study at the Bristol Heart Institute suggests red blood cell transfusions given to heart surgery patients could increase their risk of heart attack or stroke. The transfusions are performed in order to improve the delivery of oxygen to the body’s tissues. But study revealed patients who received a transfusion had a three-fold increase in complications linked to lack of oxygen.
The study is published in the journal Circulation.
