Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is one of the drug widely used painkillers. A preliminary laboratory study published in the ACS’ Chemical Research in Toxicology journal suggests that people taking paracetamol should limit the intake of caffeine because the caffeine triples the amount of a toxic by-product created when the pain killer is broken down. The toxin is the same as the one in charge for liver failure and liver damage in toxic reactions involving alcohol and paracetamol.
The researchers found that the toxic interaction could be developed not only from drinking caffeinated beverages while taking the painkiller, but also from using large amounts of medications that intentionally combine caffeine and acetaminophen (paracetamol) for the treatment of migraine headaches, menstrual discomfort and other conditions.
Paracetamol is a major ingredient in numerous cold and flu medications, including Tylenol and Panadol, among others.
