A new study at University of Nebraska-Lincoln has revealed that a rare gene may be responsible for impulsivity, alcohol problems in men.
Researchers say the gene plays an important role in brain development and in how neurons function. Being impulsive can lead people to say things they regret, buy things they really don’t need, engage in behaviours that are risky and even develop troublesome addictions. Thay found found links between impulsivity and a rarely researched gene called NRXN3.
The newly discovered connection, which was more prevalent among men than women in the study, may help explain certain inclinations toward alcohol or drug dependence, Stoltenberg said.
