Doctor Ruth Hussey, the director of public health for north-west England, has called for the health impact of alcohol to be considered before drinks licences are granted.
Despite of the British Beer and Pub Association considering there’s absolutely no link at all between the number of licences in an area and the amount people drink, Dr Hussey suggested the level of alcohol-related accident and emergency admissions should be taken into consideration when it came to granting new licences. According to her position, changes in licensing laws in England must take account of the needs of public health
