A team of researchers Center for the Study of Weight Regulation and Associated Disorders at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, US have described for the first time the genetic model of obesity in a fish. In opinion of Roger Cone and Gerald Weissmann, two of team members, this model could explain how eating fish can help eliminate obesity.
The team started the research causing obesity in zebrafish by initiating similar genetic mutation that generates severe obesity in humans. After this period, the zebrafish become a model of human disorder such as obesity. This way scientists were able to understand the molecular basis of this disease.
This research will have two positive consequences. One way, the scientific team can explain why humans can eliminate obesity by eating fish. On the other hand, this research will increase the power and efficiency of the drug discovery process, in order to offer new and cheap medicines to the market.
