There are more men being diagnosed with prostate cancer in New York State now than there were in the 1980s.
It is believed that most of the increase has been due to more screening for prostate cancer. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test can identify very early cases of prostate cancer, many years before they would otherwise be diagnosed, increasing the incidence rate in parts of the state with active screening programs. Also, prostate cancer is more common at older ages and more men are living longer and reaching the ages when prostate cancer most frequently occurs.
The death rate from prostate cancer, however, is declining.
