According to new figures from the National Cancer Registry, the number of cases of prostate cancer in Ireland in men over the age of 55 has doubled over the past 10 years. It was also revealed that the number of deaths from the disease only rose very slightly between 1996 and 2006,
Ireland’s death rate remains high by international standards however, being third only to those in Norway and Sweden.
The increase in prostate cancer rates is being put down to the five-fold increase in PSA tests between 1995 and 2004.
