Administration of androgens supplements has been advocated for men with sexual dysfunction and hypoandrogenism. The preponderance of evidence indicates that most delivery forms of testosterone are effective but the role of dehydroepiandrosterone is controversial. Recently Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, conducted a placebo-controlled, randomized trial of oral androgen (testosterone versus dehydroepiandrosterone) supplementation was carried out to determine their efficacy.
This study did not suggest a clinical benefit of testosterone undecanoate or dehydroepiandrosterone supplementation in men with hypoandrogenism and sexual dysfunction. The recommended dose of testosterone undecanoate may have been inadequate or poorly absorbed. Increased doses or an alternative testosterone delivery form may result in a different response.
