A new type of medication to help smokers quit will be assessed by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) next year. Varenicline (champix) is the first non-nicotine drug specifically designed to help smokers give up. The drug mimics the action of nicotine on the human body and is thought to work by both reducing the urge to smoke and relieving withdrawal symptoms.
