The American Cancer Society recommends that men should have a yearly PSA and digital rectal exam (DRE) beginning at the age of 50.
Men at high risk, which include African-American men and men who have had a close relative who developed prostate cancer before the age of 65, should begin testing at the age of 45. Men diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer usually have no symptoms, and their cancer is detected by the PSA and/or DRE tests.
More advanced forms of prostate cancer may present as changes in urinary habits, blood in the urine or bone pain.
