A complex research team Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, have developed natural way for prevention of food contamination and spoilage. Scientists used antimicrobial agents derived from natural sources such as paprika, oregano, cloves, oregano and thyme to create biodegradable plastics and polymers able to ihibit the development of bacterial biofilms on food surfaces and packaging.
Al the above natural substances have strong antimicrobial reaction against many different kinds of microorganisms. The result of resarch is a serrie of biodegradabile polymers that could block or prevent the formation and development of bacterial biofilms.
The conclusions of the study will be exposed today in Boston at the 234th national American Chemical Society meeting.
