What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is not just a simple disease, it is a group of conditions, a very complex disorder that comprises more than 100 distinct conditions involving damage to the joints and other parts of the body. Arthritis can affect people at any stage of life, but it is considered to be the leading cause of disability in people older than fifty-five years.

There are different forms of arthritis. Each has a different cause, but they often share a common symptom - persistent joint pain.

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. Statistics suggests that abnormal anatomy might contribute to the early development of this disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis type which affects the joints and may also affect other parts of the body. The bad news is rheumatoid arthritis has no cure. Early, aggressive treatment can help manage the inflamatory process, and better control pain, stiffness, and fatigue.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, generally refers to children affected by inflammatory arthritis under the age of sixteen. Typically, the course of rheumatoid arthritis is different in children and adults.

Psoriatic arthritis affects people suffering from the chronic skin condition psoriasis and commonly affects joints of the hands and feet and the tendons where they attach to bone.

Reactive arthritis (which is also known as Reiter’s syndrome) is a disorder with seemingly unrelated symptoms of joint pain, redness of the eyes, and urinary tract signs.

Infectious arthritis can be caused by an infection or by bacteria.

Gout is a painful type of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in and around the joints.

Pseudogout - also known as CPPD (calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease) - is caused by deposits of calcium phosphate crystals - not uric acid - in the joints.
