Cholesterol

In simple words, cholesterol is a fat (lipid) that exists in the outer layer of every cell in our body and is critical for normal body functioning. Cholesterol, which is produced by the liver, is a waxy steroid and is transported in the blood plasma of all animals. Many scientific studies concluded that small amounts are also synthesized in plants and fungi.

Functions of cholesterol

  • prevents crystallization of hydrocarbons in the membrane, builds and maintains cell membranes (outer layer)
  • essential for cell membrane permeability (which molecules can pass into the cell and which cannot)
  • involved in production of androgens and estrogens hormones
  • important for production of hormones released by the adrenal glands (cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, and others)
  • helps bile functioning
  • converts sun light to vitamin D
  • helps metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K
  • insulates nerve fibers
