Cholesterol
In simple words, cholesterol is a fat (lipid) that exists in the outer layer of every cell in our body and
is critical for normal body functioning. Cholesterol, which is produced by the liver, is a waxy steroid and
is transported in the blood plasma of all animals. Many scientific studies concluded that small amounts are also
synthesized in plants and fungi.
Functions of cholesterol
prevents crystallization of hydrocarbons in the membrane, builds and maintains cell membranes (outer layer)
essential for cell membrane permeability (which molecules can pass into the cell and which cannot)
involved in production of androgens and estrogens hormones
important for production of hormones released by the adrenal glands (cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, and others)
helps bile functioning
converts sun light to vitamin D
helps metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K
