New strategy suggested for protecting aging americans against infectious disease
Infectious disease
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have uncovered new information about the body's immune
system in a study that suggests new strategies may be in order for protecting the country's aging
population against disease.
The research focused on an important component of the body's immune system, a certain type of white
blood cell called naïve T-cells. These cells are called naive because they have no experience of
encountering germs. However, once they encounter germs, they learn and adapt to become strong defenders

More evidence suggests diabetes drug may be dangerous
Diabetes medication
A popular class of drugs for treating type 2 diabetes is under scrutiny
again. A new Canadian study released by the Institute for Clinical

risk of heart failure, heart attacks and death.
Published in the December 12th issue of JAMA, ICES scientists looked at the
glitazone class of drugs including rosiglitazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone
(Actos) in the first real world population-based study of its kind. All
Ontario residents aged 65 years or older, treated with at least one oral
diabetic medication were followed between 2002 and 2006.

Cholesterol lowering drugs increase risk of hemorrhagic stroke
Cholesterol
"People taking cholesterol-lowering drugs such as atorvastatin after a stroke may be at an increased
risk of hemorrhagic stroke, or bleeding in the brain, a risk not found in patients taking statins who
have never had a stroke. But researchers caution the risk must be balanced against the much larger
overall benefit of the statin in reducing the total risk of a second stroke and other cardiovascular
events when making treatment decisions. The research is published in the December 12, 2007, online
issue of Neurology", the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
